‘So now, Blarns, we’re set for your call to De Groote,’ Bond said briskly. ‘It comes down to relying on your silver tongue, my friend. And,’ he added with a grin, ‘your training by Argo in deception.’

Bond coached Pike for the call as if he was rehearsing a stage show. ‘Oh,’ he added warily, turning to Alex, ‘the ah, Hobart boys want to know if it’s all right, if we can have authorisation from you two, to run a tap on your phone for a little while? It can be done externally. It’s just that we want to know what De Groote and his bosses are getting from here.

‘They can monitor Blarney’s call to the professor. Then a full coverage from noon tomorrow?’

‘Go ahead,’ Alex reacted dismissively. Too readily for Pike’s comfort.

‘What’s just another bunch of listeners matter?’ she added scornfully. ‘And fancy a new wife and husband being selfish enough to want some privacy in their bedroom.’

She prepared to leave to see her parents. To avoid being near the conversation with the detested De Groote. She would be back to see the visiting detectives, as requested, at seven.

‘The meeting will be at the station,’ Bond advised, glancing at Pike for guidance. He was at a loss to know how to console her. ‘We don’t want this place looking like a cop shop. And the phone buggers would hear them arrive.’

‘On top of it all,’ Alex said, ‘it was a rough day at school. The children kept asking me about the man who set our house on fire, and the insurance and repairs still have to be organised. Getting a matching carpet won’t be easy.’

Pike embraced his wife and they walked together to the verandah. ‘I’ll talk to the insurance people and see about the repairs tomorrow,’ he promised, kissing her eyes and then her lips. ‘I love you so.’

‘This sook loves you more,’ she countered. She preferred to walk rather than drive, she said. She needed the time to think. Pike told Noel Atkins where she was going as the constable crawled by in the Land Rover.
